Both digital photography and traditional film based photography are based on certain fundamental ideas like capturing the image through a lens, use of a shutter to achieve it etc. The main difference between the two lies in how the image coming through the lens is converted and stored. In the mean time, I will be highlighting the various benefits of digital photography to the mankind over the tradional film based photography technology.

In conventional photography, the incoming light rays react with the chemical coating on the film and forms an image which is then developed in a dark room into a negative. This negative is turned into a positive by passing light through them on to a light sensitive paper which results in the photograph this is not the case as the digital photography..

The process of capturing the image is totally different in digital photography. The light coming through the lens falls on electronic sensors made of Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) which convert the light into electrical impulses.The screen on which the image is captured comprises millions of pixels or picture elements which each pixel being a CCD. These impulses are processed instantaneously, converted to digital image and displayed on the screen as well as stored in memory or other storage devices, and this is one of the many benefits associated with the digital photography, since it does nt need any film before any images can be formed and it does not cost much in terms of image processing time and amount needed for it production.

Another benefit of digital photography is owing to the fact that the quality of digital images is measured in terms of the number of pixels or the resolution of the screen. A typical computer monitor has a screen resolution of 800x600 which means that the monitor can display 800 pixels from left to right and 600 from top to bottom. The total number of pixels adds up to 480 000 in this case. The resolution of the background screen in digital photography is much higher of the order of Mega pixels and this is another major benefit of digital photography.. The image size can be anywhere between 1.8 and 13.1 mega pixels depending on the quality of camera.

Thus the biggest picture that can be printed with a 2 mega pixels camera is 5.8 inches by 3.8 inches size while a 4 mega pixels camera can print 8.2 inches by 5.4 inches size photos. These are the photo sizes with 300 pixels per inch print resolution.

However, as a result of the benefits of digital photography over the film based photography technology, with lesser 200 pixels per inch print resolution larger pictures with less detail can be printed. The quality would be sufficient for most general use. The size correspondingly increases to 8.7 inches by 5.8 inches for a 2 mega pixels camera and 12.2 inches by 8.2 inches for a 4 mega pixels camera.

Discussing the history of digital photography would be a long journey because one have to examine how, when, and where it started. In the year 1972, an Instruments Inc came about the designing of a camera which was not digital but an a type of analog piece of equipment which does not use the film for the capturing of images and this has some things to do in the history of the digital photography.

Also, few years later another step make up the history of digital photography when Samson Steven of Kodak Company was been instructed by his project supervisor to find a way of building a camera using image sensors that would be in the solid state. These solid-state image sensors are photosensitive chips which were made of diodes known as the photosites to record light receive from the sun.

According to him, in the year 1975 when he first snapped the first digital picture, the image took him almost 24 seconds to get recorded onto the cassette, and another 24 seconds to read a playback unit unto a television set.

Taking a nude picture has been many people concerns, most especially a lot of digital camera users who had preferred the digital camera to the old photography apparatus and equipment used in taking the photography pictures. If you are taking a snapshot with you going off with your body without putting anything on, I mean you going on nude has been one of the major problems most people using the digital camera do and always have but today I think that would be solved because I have once had that kind of problem once or twice before.

Nude digital photography use, really implies you putting up your digital camera, let go off your clothings and there you go with a snapshots of you, using your digital camera to take a nude snapshot or image of yourself. Using a digital camera to take a nude digital photograph have been such an easy task, that it does nt require much stress work unlike the old photographic method and it is not as difficult as the brain surgery, moreover, don’t get me wrong, because I don’t say it might not be a bit hard but I am assuring you that if you can take to my advice and guide on how I learn to do it, then you will always see it as one of the simplest task to take ever.

I had always found taking a nude digital photography to be a difficult and most complex thing I would ever think about, because I used to be a kind of novice some years back too, until when I learned how to do it in a right way from my dad, few years ago, and this had made me to become a little savvy in it to the extent that am now giving some people coaching on it that is what I had always been thinking and planning of doing some years back when I had not become an expert in the field as well in nude digital photography use, although I might not be a savvy yet but I still have some number of people that I still help regarding taking nude digital photography with your digital camera. Do you think that this is too good to be true? Alright, let me go straight to the point now then……

Few years back now, my fiancee asked that I should send her a nude digital photograph of mine, that she would like to see it because its been a very long time we meet each other last, and then she was still having her education abroad, I tried my possible best then in making sure that I get myself snapped to have my nude digital photography, so as to make strong and strengthen the love between she and I even though we are far few distances away from each other. I tried having my own nude digital photograph the first time, second time and third time, I was completely fed up of the whole situation because I was not able to come out with good and quality nude digital photograph of myself to the extent that I was almost confused and it could easily be read on my face that I was not happy….and that was how and when I knew the pain of being a novice at something….Not until my dad fortunately came into my room one sunny afternoon when he saw me nude and he was astonished seeing me in the first instance undressed, he requested to know why I had undressed myself, with a digital camera in hands it was then he got to understood why I had chosen to be undressed so that I can take a nude digital photograph, that fateful day…and he promised to help me out I believed him for this because he had been a professional photographer for quite some years ago.

After he had fixed up the digital the camera appropriately he had to put up the light to get the sharp and bright image of me, with the camera placed few distances away from where I was standing, few centimeters apart from each other, he projected the digital camera towards me, and with the manipulations and settings of the zoom lens, the slr, flickr and some other functions of the digital camera which I shall be talking about in my later posts someday to come and thank God the digital camera had gotten a long cord and a very sharp lens to have been able to capture my nude digital photography snapshot although this took him few minutes, to get done because he had to go bending down a little making sure that the digital camera is equally placed half height of my real natural height, so as to prevent the horizon of my shadow from spoiling the quality and sharpness of the digital photograph. And after few minutes setting those knobs and lens buttons he was done and let me tell you that I love the nude digital photography office so much that I had to send it in no time without further delay to my fiancee after he was been printed out from the digital photography scanner which he had owned in his studio and photography who also loved seeing it so much……..

She was so glad with the nude digital photograph I sent her I could heard and feel it in her voice when I was speaking with her on the phone about it few days after. She was so speechless that she never believe am such a damn cute guy…..and this very nude digital photography use really help me so much that I not only be able to take it myself and I had also helped other friends with their nude digital photography use aftermath when I had gone through so many intensive theoretical and practical training I had gotten from my dad.

In the world of digital photography, many people using the digital camera always most of the time found things difficult and at times are confused about how to go about their digital photography work that I think it would be very nice if I could discuss it here and that is why I had gone a research on the possible ways this problem could be stopped, and in order to make many of the digital camera more educated on how to make use of their digital camera light during and whenever they are taking a digital photography in a low night area or location. Three keys to successful night shots

Before you start shooting night photos, here are the three most important things to remember:

Disable your flash
Bring out breathtaking detail in low-light conditions by using a long exposure (the time your camera takes to collect light).

Select Flash from the capture menu, then select Flash off. Press Menu/Ok.
Use a tripod
Long exposures require you to hold your camera perfectly still to avoid blurring. A tripod really helps. If you can't get your hands on one, you can try bracing yourself against a stationary object like a tree, or a wall.
Use your timer
Even when a camera is on a tripod, your finger pressing the trigger can cause enough movement to blur a photo. You can avoid touching the camera altogether by using the timer.

Select Timer from the capture menu and press Menu/Ok.

Adjust your camera settings

The key to getting a successful night shot like this is wide aperture, low ISO, and a slow shutter speed.

Aperture
If your camera has manual settings, you can widen the aperture to allow more light to come through the camera lens (see above), which is vital at night when there isn't much light to begin with.

Select either the Av (Aperture priority) or M (Manual) shooting mode on your camera to adjust aperture. The widest opening for most lenses is f2.8.

ISO
A camera's ISO number dictates its sensitivity to light. A higher ISO (a "fast" ISO) will make your camera more light-sensitive, but will add more grain (or "noise") to your photo. If your camera allows you to adjust ISO, set it low (somewhere around 50 or 100) for sharp detail in low-light. This setting will increase exposure time slightly, but will produce a much richer photo.
Shutter speed
Because you're not using your flash, your shutter speed has to be a lot slower to get enough light. The shutter speed in this shot was at least a few seconds-pretty slow in camera terms.

Select either the Tv (Shutter priority) or M (Manual) shooting mode on your camera to adjust shutter speed. The slowest shutter speeds on most cameras range from a few seconds to a "bulb" setting (shutter remains open as long as you want).

Several HP digital cameras feature a Night Scenery shooting mode. This automatically disables the flash and uses a long exposure time.

Experiment in different conditions

Experiment with your camera settings and shoot a lot of photos. Soon, you'll get a feel for which settings are best for each low-light situation. Here are some quick guidelines for how each of these conditions will affect your picture taking.

Dusk and dawn
The early evening and morning hours are a perfect time to catch a nighttime glow from the city skyline, or the bright moon. And because there is some light in the sky, shutter speed can be set a little higher, lowering the chance of blur.
Evening
Darker is better when you want to get strong contrast in your photos. But the darker it is, the longer the exposure will have to be. The result is more breathtaking shots.
City streets
Significant amounts of light can be emitted in bustling public places, reducing the need for really slow shutter speeds. Use this to your advantage when taking night photos.

Photo ideas and suggested exposure times

Here are some suggested exposure times for different types of subjects:

Christmas lights: 1/4 to 3 seconds (pictured) of exposure.
Cityscapes: 2 to 30 seconds of exposure.
Moving water or fountains: 2 to 5 seconds of exposure.
Portraits: 3 seconds with flash. With some HP cameras you can use the Night Portrait shooting mode, which automatically adjusts your shutter speed for night shots and adds a quick flash at the end of the exposure to capture your subject in detail.

THE BRIEF HISTORY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
In my last post I was not able to post much things about the historical background of digital photography and I promised to update the blog with more informational contents and that why I have decided to spend more time here today so as to fulfill my promise of adding more informative content here.... I do hope you will find all these information important................

On October 17, 1969, George Smith and Willard Boyle invented the charge-coupled device (CCD), the image sensor that’s the heart of all digital cameras, at Bell Labs. But like many inventions originally designed for one use, Smith and Boyle were attempting to create a new kind of semiconductor memory for computers. At the same time they were looking for a way to develop a solid-state camera for use in video phones. It took just an hour for them to sketch out the CCD’s basic structure, define the concept of its operation, and outline the applications for which it would be best suited.

By 1970, Smith and Boyle had built the CCD into the world's first solid-state video camera. In 1975, they demonstrated the first CCD camera with image quality sharp enough for broadcast television.

Today, CCD technology is pervasive not only in broadcasting but also in video applications that range from security monitoring to high-definition television, and from endoscopy to desktop videoconferencing. Facsimile machines, copying machines, image scanners, digital still cameras, and bar code readers also have employed CCDs to turn patterns of light into useful information.

It wasn’t until 1981, however, that Sony Corporation produced the first prototype digital camera, the Mavica (Magnetic Video Camera) electronic still camera, which recorded images as magnetic impulses on a compact two-inch still-video floppy disk. The images were captured on the disk by using two CCD (charge-coupled device) chips. One chip stored luminance information and the other separately recorded the chrominance information. This camera provided a 720,000-pixel image. The images could be stored on the floppy disk either in Frame or Field mode. When the photographer selected the Frame mode, the sensor recorded each picture on two tracks. Up to 25 images could be recorded on each disk.

When the photographer selected the Field mode, the camera recorded each picture on only one track, allowing up to 50 images to be recorded. Images were less detailed compared to images recorded in the two-track Frame mode. The MVC-5000 was considered to be the leader in image quality during its time. This was then put into a video reader that was connected to a television monitor or color printer. However, the early Mavica cannot be considered a true digital camera even though it started the digital camera revolution. It was a video camera that took video freeze-frames.

All this made the Mavica camera a bulky affair that looked more like a floppy disk box than a traditional camera. But, nevertheless, the race was on to see who could take this technology to new heights.

Unlike traditional cameras that use film to capture and store an image, digital cameras use a solid-state device called an image sensor. These fingernail-sized silicon chips contain millions of photosensitive diodes called photosites. In the brief flickering instant that the shutter is open, each photosite records the intensity or brightness of the light that falls on it by accumulating a charge; the more light, the higher the charge. The brightness recorded by each photosite is then stored as a set of numbers that can then be used to set the color and brightness of dots on the screen or ink on the printed page to reconstruct the image.

In 1986, Kodak scientists invented the world's first megapixel sensor, capable of recording 1.4 million pixels that could produce a 5x7-inch digital photo-quality print. In 1987, Kodak released seven products for recording, storing, manipulating, transmitting and printing electronic still video images. In 1990, Kodak developed the Photo CD system and proposed "the first worldwide standard for defining color in the digital environment of computers and computer peripherals." In 1991, Kodak released the first professional digital camera system (DCS), aimed at photojournalists. It was a Nikon F-3 camera equipped by Kodak with a 1.3 megapixel sensor.

Another significant model of camera, XapShot was a Hi-band still video camera. The XapShot had a built-in flash, self-timer, and an unusual rechargeable lead acid battery. Also required was a kit which included one floppy disk, the battery, and computer interface card with software. The American version of the XapShot could send a signal to a TV/VCR for playback and recording of images. There was also a very basic software utility that worked under System 6/7 for the Mac in conjuction with the a special video capture card that the camera connected to. Later, the Xapshot worked with Adobe Photoshop to capture the images.

In 1990, Logitech came out with the Dycam Model 1 black-and-white digicam, the world's first completely digital consumer camera. It stored 32 compressed images internally using 1MB RAM on a 376 x 240 pixel CCD at 256 shades of gray in TIFF format. This simple camera by today’s standards had an 8mm fixed-focus lens, standard shutter speeds of 1/30 to 1/1000 second and a built-in flash. The Dycam worked similarly to the XapShot except that it included the digitizing hardware in the camera itself. The user had to connect the camera to a PC to transfer images.

The first digital cameras for the consumer-level market that worked with a home computer via a serial cable were the Apple QuickTake 100 camera, which appeared in 1994. This camera featured a 640 x 480 pixel CCD which produced eight images stored in internal memory. It also had a built-in flash.

Unfortunately, having a tiny computer inside a camera presented problems in their exterior look. Since the camera’s onboard computer–essentially the CCD processor–too up so much space, early manufacturers like Fuji created square-shaped digital cameras. These were not only difficult to hold but required the user to learn a whole new way of using the device. But further miniaturizing of the camera’s sensor and, thus, it’s inner workings, led companies like Kodak, Nikon, Toshiba and Olympus to produce ever smaller cameras, and ones that a user could hold in much the same way as traditional cameras.

Today, just a little over 30 years after the invention of the original CCD sensor, digital cameras of all sizes and shapes–many of which now look similar to traditional 35mm cameras–are flooding the market.

The very first forms of photography date back to the early 19th century when America's history was captured on film during the Civil War. Since then many advancements have been made in the world of photography. One of the newest advancements in the field was the birth of digital photography which helps to facilitate and modernise the new photography world by the introduction of a piece of photography apparatus or equipment known as a digital camera.. In 1963 when a student at Stanford University invented a videodisk camera that could take a photograph and store the image on a disk for several minutes this would be the precursor to digital photography. With this new form of taking photographs digitally and storing the image to a disk, photography would become less time consuming and a whole new chapter would open to future photographers. In the mid 70s Kodak began to work on filmless technologies. In the mid 80s with the release of the compact disc digital technology was vastly increasing. By 1990 the first digital camera hit shelves for commercial sales. These would be the first steps into a new digital world, and pave the way for many things to come.

Capture intimacy with a close-up

A close-up digital nature photography brings the viewer in and captures all the hidden details you might not ever see otherwise. It also helps to frame your subject, away from busy, distracting backgrounds.

Use macro mode

Set your camera to close-up or "macro" mode. Check your user manual for exactly how to do this, or look for the shooting mode with an icon depicting a flower. In this mode, your camera will take sharp pictures within inches of your subject.

Use your camera's zoom

Without a macro shooting mode, your camera will have a hard time focusing really close to your subject, but you can use your camera's zoom function.

To get close to your subject using your zoom, you actually have to stand farther away and zoom in. You can catch roughly the same shot as with a macro function. Still, there's no substitute for a true macro shooting mode for getting in really close and sharp.

Know when to use manual settings

For shots farther away than 12 inches or so, it's best to switch to portrait shooting mode. This is a factory preset that reduces your depth of field and makes objects within a few feet of you sharp, while blurring anything in the distance.
See how the subject is sharp, but background is soft.

Keep your subject centered

When using a shallow depth of field, you don't have much room to play with. When your subject is really close up, position it right in the middle of the frame to make sure it comes out sharp.

Turn off your flash and use other light sources

Your camera's flash will sometimes wash out color in a close-up photo or cause it to look overexposed due to too much light. In these cases, turn your flash off and supplement with available natural light from windows or lamps.

The daylight hours are the easiest time of day for your camera to focus automatically. To help you get the shots you want at night or in low-light conditions, use a tripod or you may get some blur if you don't hold the camera steady.

The opportunities for beautiful close-ups are almost limitless. Here are just a few ideas to get you started experimenting.

Introduction To Digital Photography (Lesson 3)
There is still a lot of confusion surrounding digital cameras and digital photography. With all the new cameras and options it just seems to get more confusing instead of clearer. It is easier to approach something if you can take it in small bites. So in an effort to make digital easier to approach and understand I've grouped together everything you need to know to get started in ten easy to understand lessons. I do want to believe that you have found the previous lessons I had been posting on this blog very useful and informative enough, meanwhile, I would still like to implore you to subscribe to my Newsletter where I shall be revealing more information to anyone on my mailing list free of charge, useful information that you and I can use to make and the world of photography a better one using with the introduction of the digital photography and that is why I have put up this lesson tagged, "Introduction to digital photography" to enable us learn more things and fact about digital photography, and this is the lesson 3, sit back and you enjoy reading on............

Lesson 3: Editing Your Photos

I you learn only one thing from reading this series of articles please learn this:

You will never be completely happy with your digital photos until you are competent at post processing.

What is post processing? Simply put, it's the task of "tweaking" your photos until they are just the way you like them. You can spend seconds doing this with each photo, or you can spend hours doing this to each photo - it's up to you.

There are almost as many software tools for post processing as there are models of digital cameras. In most cases your digital camera came with a tool that will allow you to edit your photos, though in most cases it won't be very robust and you'll outgrow it before very long.

Doing it Yourself
When you shoot film you don't pre-adjust the camera for white balance, color saturation, brightness, etc...you just shoot the film.

When you get the film processed there is (hopefully) a competent operator in the lab who either manually or automatically adjusts your images for color, brightness, and contrast when printing from your negatives.

In other words, someone else handles all of the post processing. When you shoot digital you have a choice of dropping off your memory card at a lab for printing or you can print your own images. It's entirely up to you. Unfortunately digital printing is still something new for many labs and the quality of digital prints you receive can vary wildly.

A common post processing tasks is red-eye removal. If you've ever shot photos of pets or kids you've seen the infamous Red-Eye; it's a problem that plagues both film and digital equally. See What is Red-Eye below.

Once you have an image on film with redeye there isn't much you can do to fix it. But with digital you're in much better shape. A number of image editing programs have functions that automatically fix redeye automatically or you can do the touch-up yourself using the paint brush tool. Or maybe you've shot a photo that came out a little too dark for your liking. With film you're at the mercy of the photo processor to properly adjust the exposure for printing. But with digital you have a number of options from adjusting the overall brightness, adjusting the image gamma or spot editing to bring out specific parts of the image. In some cases you can use a single function such as the "Auto Color" function in PhotoShop. Sometimes a single tool goes a long way toward correcting an image's faults.

In addition to the image editing programs themselves there is an amazing array of programs called plug-ins. These programs literally plug into your image editor adding functionality and becoming part of the editor. Plug-ins are designed to do only one or two specialized tasks, but do them exceptionally well.

One example of post processing is shown below. The photo on the left is an original photo straight out of the camera. The photo on the right has been processed using Photoshop Elements to adjust color balance, contrast, saturation, cropping (to a 4x6 ratio) and to add a copyright.

There are many more things I could have done to the original, but this is what most folks would do (minus the copyright) to get an image ready for printing. Notice that the colors are now richer, the whites are whiter, the photo is brighter, and it's now in a 4x6 ratio suitable for printing on glossy photo paper.

Converting the photo on the left to the photo on the right took me less than one minute to do (notice how dim and dull the original is). But I'll warn you there is a significant learning curve with Photoshop ($600) and even with Photoshop Elements ($99), but once you've climbed that curve there's nothing you won't be able to do to your photos using these tools.

But let's say you want to "start small"; may I suggest exploring the software that comes with your camera. Most Canon digital cameras come with a product called "Zoom Browser". It provides enough tools to allow you to adjust color and brightness and crop your images. If you don't like the software that came with your camera and want an easy and intuitive program to start with, spend $30 on Microsoft's "Picture It!" program. When you want to stretch a bit more try Paint Shop Pro from Jasc software. The base program costs around $99 and is easier to learn than Photoshop.

There are so many different photo editing products to choose from that it can be quite confusing. My advice to newcomers is to first try the software that came with your camera. Once you've gotten your feet wet you'll be ready to move up to a stronger package and you'll have a better idea what you want. Products like Adobe's Photoshop Elements or Jasc's Paint Shop Pro are logical next steps. Then if you still can't get enough, you'll be ready for the full-fledged Adobe Photoshop, which is the industry standard for image editing.

As you learn more you'll find that you can dramatically improve your photos. A side benefit of doing the post processing yourself is that it can make you a better photographer. It will teach you volumes about exposure, the color of light and about composition all of which helps improve the most valuable piece of photographic equipment you own - the one between your ears.

What is Redeye?
Redeye happens when the source of light, usually your flash, is physically close to the lens. Because the angle of light from the flash to the subject is very close to the line of sight of the lens, the light from the flash is reflected off the back of the subjects eyes back through the lens and onto the film or digital image sensor. That reflection shows up as red eyes for people and red or green eyes for most animals.

Some cameras offer an anti-redeye function. All this does is fire a pre-flash before the actual flash and the opening of the shutter to take the picture. The idea is the subject's eyes are dilated in low light (wide open); the pre-flash causes the pupils to shrink reducing the chance that the eyes will reflect light back into the lens.

So in an effort to make digital easier to approach and understand I've grouped together everything you need to know to get started in ten easy to understand lessons. Just as I had rightly promised in the lesson 1 of this introdcution explore, I have come again right here with the continuation part of the lesson, tagged "Introduction to Digital Photography" Lesson 2.............Pls, read on.........................

A digital image, just like the image you see on your computer monitor or television, is made up tiny dots called pixels. The term "Resolution", when used to describe a digital camera refers to the size of the digital image the camera produces, and is usually expressed in terms of "megapixels" or how many million pixels it can record in a single image. The number of pixels a camera captures is called the camera's resolution.

For example, a camera that captures 1600 x 1200 pixels produces an image with a resolution of 1.92 million pixels and would be referred to as a 2.0 megapixel camera. You get to 1.92 million pixels by multiplying the vertical and horizontal dimensions. That number is then rounded off to 2 for marketing purposes.

The image below shows the relative image sizes of today's most common digital cameras. At their actual size even the smallest of them would likely be larger than your entire computer screen. Notice the tremendous difference between 2.1 megapixels and 3.3 megapixels. This is why you'll get better prints from a 3 megapixel camera when compared to a 2 megapixel camera. More resolution means better quality - up to a point. Both optics and the quality of the image capture chip play a role too.

This example gives you a feeling for the size relationship of images recorded at 1.3 through 5.0 megapixels. As you can see a jump from 1.3 to just 3.3 megapixels is significant.

The Advantage of Higher Resolutions
The advantage of having a camera with a higher resolution is you have more pixels to work with. That's important when getting prints made. In general more resolution means better print quality. It also gives you an advantage if you need to crop the image. Cropping is when you only use part of the image for the final print. It also gives you an advantage when creating larger 5x7, 8x10, or bigger prints. The more you have to blow an image up the more any defects will start to jump out. Starting with a higher resolution image means there's less magnification necessary to get to a given print size.

An example of this is shown in the images here. The picture in back represents a 5 megapixel image with dimensions of 2560x1920 pixels. The picture in front of it represents a 4 megapixel image with dimensions of 2272x1704 pixels, the next image represents a 3 megapixel image with resolution of 2048x1536, the one in front of it a 2 megapixel image with resolution of 1600x1200, and the top picture a 1 megapixel image with dimensions of 1280x960 pixels. As you can see, the 4 and 5 megapixel photos are much larger than the 1 and 2 megapixel photos allowing for much greater detail in your prints and giving you the ability to crop, or "cut off", parts of the photo while still retaining enough pixels for a good print.

Remember, you can produce a printout from just about any image, but the more you have to blow it up the more you degrade the quality.

Doing the Math
I've often noted that people get confused about how "big" (in inches) a digital image is. To understand digital image size you simply have to understand that pixels are more tightly packed for printing than for display on a computer screen.

Computer monitors display images at 72 ppi (pixels per inch), meaning that there are 72 pixels for every 1 inch of linear screen space you see on your screen. Therefore, if you have an image on the screen that is 720 pixels wide, it will take up 10 inches of linear screen space (72 dpi x 10 inches = 720 pixels). This may look beautiful on the screen, but if you try to print this image on a printer at 72 dpi the result will look extremely choppy and jagged. To get a good looking print from your printer you'll need to print at 300 ppi (pixels per inch), which means that the 10 inches across the screen will be reduced to only 2.4 inches on paper (720 / 300 = 2.4, or 24% of the original 10 inches). The result is a smaller, but much cleaner, image on paper. So a good rule of thumb about how physically big an image will be on paper is that it will be about 25% or one quarter of it's size on your screen.

It's important to understand the difference between ppi or pixels per inch and dpi or dots per inch. When we say to print an image at 300ppi a lot of people get confused because their printer is a 1,440 or 2,800 dpi printer.

Lets say for example you have an image that is 1200 x 1200 pixels and you're going to print that image on a 2,800 dpi printer. It would take a screen 16.6 inches wide to display the image at full size.

1,200 pixels ÷ 72ppi = 16.6 inches

On paper that same image would be 4 inches wide.

1,200 pixels ÷ 300ppi = 4 inches

Each pixel in that image will be made up of 9 ink droplets on the paper using a 2,800 dpi printer.

2,800 dots per inch ÷ 300 pixels per inch = 9.3 droplets

Going back a few years photo printers were capable of only 720dpi printing which gave you about 2.5 drops per pixel. The results were good but often looked a bit coarse. The big advance was when photo quality printers reached 1,440 dpi, which gives you around 5 droplets per pixel on the paper. At 1,440 dpi continuous tone areas such as blue skies look more natural. It's difficult to see the difference between current 1,440 and 2,800 dpi printers, though top of the line 2,800 dpi printers may have other features you want or need.

Beware of Imposters
There is true resolution and interpolation. Interpolation is the process of "sizing up" a digital image by adding pixels that were not there originally. Since every pixel must have a color, this process usually involves assigning an intermediate color to the "invented" pixels based upon the colors of the pre-existing pixels surrounding the new ones. The result is a larger image in terms of resolution, but one that now has less clarity because you simply cannot produce something from nothing. Interpolation is most common on low dollar, entry-level digital cameras. Just keep in mind the lower the real resolution the fuzzier the interpolated image will be.

Summary
I'm often asked, "How many megapixels do I really need?"

My answer is "As many as you can afford."

I'd recommend a minimum of 3.2 megapixels for general shooting. More if you want to do serious shooting or if you think you might want to print some of those images at 5x7, 8x10 or larger sizes.

Why shoot in black and white?

Think of Ansel Adams' majestic black-and-white landscapes, and you can appreciate the power that's possible when you leave color behind. Use black-and-white (or monochrome, as it's also called) techniques to heighten drama and emotion in your photos, and for giving pictures a timeless quality.

Camera settings for black-and-white photos

With digital cameras, you have three choices for getting black-and-white shots:

Shoot in black-and-white: Check your camera's manual to see if you can shoot directly in monochrome. This lets you view the photo on your camera's LCD screen in black and white, so you can see exactly what you're shooting.
Convert color photos into black and white in your camera: For many HP cameras, you can do this in the Design Gallery menu. Select "Modify Color," then "black and white." This creates a copy of an existing photo, so you'll have both versions.
Print in black and white: You can print black and white photos from those taken in color by using the Grayscale setting, available in your printer preferences menu.

All of these methods work well. However, if your goal is to create larger black-and-white prints, shooting in black and white will yield the best results.

Explore contrast

Contrast—the difference between the light and dark areas in a photo—is an essential part of black-and-white photography. There are three levels of contrast that you can experiment with when you shoot:

High contrast means striking white and black tones, with minimal gray. It can heighten tension or add drama to photos.
- Look for bright light and shadows (as in the image above) to shoot in high contrast.
Normal contrast provides the most "realistic" presentation of an image, where some things in the photo are light or white, some are dark or black, and some are in-between, or gray.
- Contrasts that are strong in color, such as red against green, look about equal in black and white, making for normal contrast.
Low contrast keeps tones mostly in the mid-range, so there are lots of grays.
- Atmospheric weather, such as fog, is perfect for shooting low contrast black-and-white photos.

This photo uses high contrast to create interesting tension.

Add drama and emotion to portraits

Emotional occasions, such as weddings, are ideal opportunities to shoot black and white. And don't forget group shots—black and white shots mean that clashing clothing isn't a problem.

Some of the features to look out for when choosing a digital photography camera are listed below in no particular order.

Resolution
Generally, a camera with 3 to 5 million megapixels can print upto A4 size. Digital cameras with 6 million pixels or more can print upto A3 or higher. Many cameras offer the facility to change the resolution if a low resolution image is required i.e. for web pages. Images are commonly saved in the JPEG (Joint Photographers Expert Group) file format which allows the digital camera or computer to compress the image to maintain quality and reduce file size.

Zoom Lens
Most point and shoot digital cameras have a 3x zoom lens which goes from semi wide angle to short telephoto & is usually the equivalent of a 35 - 105mm zoom lens on a 35mm camera. These lenses can go wide enough to shoot small groups and then zoom in for a portrait at the telephoto end. A small range of mostly high end cameras offer larger zoom ranges although Canon does provide 4x zooms on many of its budget series "A" Powershot cameras such as the A530 and A540. Digital SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses which provide the greatest choice from spectacular super wide fish eye lenses to huge telephoto lenses.

Shutter Lag
This is the time it takes to press the shutter and for the actual picture to be taken by the digital camera. Pressing and holding the shutter halfway before releasing it fully can reduce the time dramatically on most point and shoot digital cameras. Unfortunately there are still many digital cameras that can take .5 to 1 second to take a photograph. Shutter lag is virtually non-existent on digital SLR cameras and on some compacts.

Scene Modes
Many digital cameras, especially point and shoot, offer limited control by including scene modes such as portrait, night, flower, snow, beach and many other categories. These are usually in addition to the program mode.

Flash
A small built in flash is a common feature on nearly all digital cameras and can light up a subject when lighting levels become too low. The flash range is normally 3 to 5 meters. Some prosumer and professional digital cameras have a hot shoe which allows a more powerful flashgun or studio flash to be attached.

Viewfinder
Digital cameras are dominated by four types of viewfinders:

	Optical - a small window which can feel like looking through a small tunnel.
	LCD. - a small TFT screen on the back of the camera ranging in size from 1.5" to 3". Many LCDs today accurately frame a picture by showing 100% of the scene. Some cameras offer both optical and LCD viewfinders.
	EVF - Electronic viewfinders are used on some prosumer cameras with long zooms with most showing 100% of the scene. They can suffer from a slight lag when any movement is involved.
	Pentaprism - most SLRs use a pentaprism or pentamirror to project an excellent and clear image to the eyepiece.

Manual Controls
Options such as aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual control are available on higher end digital cameras and some low cost enthusiast compacts. These features allow a photographer to take control of the camera's exposure and are a great learning tool for the amateur and enthusiast. All digital SLR cameras come with manual controls for greater photographic control.

Battery Life
There are a wide range of proprietary batteries used by camera manufacturers with some cameras using the commonly available AA batteries - both alkaline and Nimh rechargeable. Proprietary batteries are often rechargeable but can be expensive. It is advisable to carry a spare battery - even for digital cameras with a long battery life of 300 shots or more.

AF Assist Lamp
This helps the digital camera to focus in low light conditions. Cameras without an AF assist lamp usually struggle to focus in low light.

Memory Cards
These come in all shapes and sizes ranging from 16mb to 4gb. Some of the most commonly used formats include compactflash, secure digital (SD), XD, memory stick & multimedia (MM). Most cameras come with small memory cards such as 16mb which only allow you to take a handful of shots before they fill up. Buying a larger card such as 256mb or higher is often necessary.

Movie Mode
Digital camera movie modes used to vary enormously but now, many cameras offer unlimited VGA movies at 30 frames per second (fps). Unfortunately even a 10 to 15 minute movie will quickly fill up a 1gb memory card. Cameras offering MPEG4 movies allow high quality movies to be more efficiently compressed. A 1gb card can record one hour of MPEG4. Digital SLR cameras do not have movie modes. Some cameras are now offering high definition video at resolutions of 1280 by 720 but these take up enormous amounts of space on memory cards.

Other features which may be of interest to some users include:

	Weatherproofing - allows cameras to be used in the rain or on the beach as they have weather proof seals. Some cameras are also waterproof upto a certain depth while camera housings can offer this facility to other cameras.
	Image Stabilization - this allows a user to handhold a camera (especially with a long lens) in lower light than a standard camera. Optical and CCD shift image stabilization cameras are more effective than digital stabilization which just involves raising the ISO and therefore making the pictures more prone to grain.
	USB - the universal serial bus is the most common way to connect a camera to a PC to download images. USB is available in versions 1.1 which runs at 12mps and version 2 which runs at 480mps. As you can see, USB2 is the preferred option as it is 40 times faster than USB1.1 and is also backwards compatible with 1.1.

When choosing a digital photography camera, there are many features to look out for, test and assess before buying the digital photography camera. The digital photography camera market can be divided into three main groups:

Point and Shoot digital photography cameras
These form the main bulk of the digital photography camera market and generally tend to be fully automatic with zoom lenses and built in flash. Some cameras may also offer manual controls and extra long zoom lenses. These digital photography cameras are mainly aimed at beginners, amateurs, families and they can also be considered for general use depending on individual set/level of intelligence in using them.

Prosumer digital photography cameras
These digital photography cameras are aimed at enthusiasts or advanced amateurs, semi-professionals and in some cases, as a backup camera for some professionals. Many of these digital photography cameras have high quality built-in zoom lenses, manual controls, raw uncompressed file format and maybe a hotshoe for external flash. Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras are also available which offer interchangeable lenses, raw format, fast operation and usually higher quality images than point and shoot cameras.Therefore, if you are such a person whose intelligence is at any of these level whcih are listed and sited above, then you need to go for a prosumer digital photography cameras whenever you are choosing a digital photography camera that would suit you and be convenient for you to use as well.

Professional digital photography cameras
Choosing a digital photography camera is not a hidden thing when it comes to the issue of a professional photographer.Professionals mainly use digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) or medium format cameras. Digital SLRs offer interchangeable lenses, high resolution, raw format, high build quality, hotshoe for external flash/studio work and fast operation. Medium format cameras offer the highest resolution available with interchangeable lenses/film backs, eye/waist level viewfinders, connection for studio flash and many accessories.

Except for medium format cameras, most of the big names in digital imaging such as Nikon, Canon, Olympus & Pentax provide cameras for the point and shoot, prosumer and professional markets. After selecting a digital camera, it is always advisable to handle the camera in a local shop to make sure it meets your requirements in terms of size, speed and general handling. The above are the facts you must know when you are to choose a digital photography camera that would suit your need and want based on your level of intelligence and technical know hoe of using the digital photography camera.

Introduction To Digital Photography

Last time I posted an article on the introdcution to what I will be coming out with later in the day as we continue exploring the world of digital photography in relating to " Introduction To Digital Photography" and this would be my very first lesson I will be posting on the introduction to digital photography out of the whole 10 lessons we are still going to learn about it..........instead of me wasting much of your valuable time talking, why not lets get started and kick off with our first lesson lol............................

Lesson 1: Should I wait a little longer...?

The above seems to be one of the many questions many of us have found ourselves asking individual about the need to be fully introduced and imparted by the guru of digital photography someday and sometimes ago...............And, I must believe that all what I'm going to say here will be accepted and fully understood by you and everyone of us here...................Read on, pls always feel free to leave a comment if you have one so that we can get to know more and more things and help one another about useful information we all need to become a digital photography pro! All what you are going to be learning in this tutorial is what I heard and found one of the digital photography "GURU' talk about and myself have seen facts in it so many times, because I have most of the experienced all these too, and that's why I need to share it with you all.

There is no doubt in my mind that a good 3 megapixel digital camera can produce printed results that beat APS film and a good-quality 4 megapixel can rival conventional 35mm film. I have prints to back up that statement. I hung up my film cameras in March of 1999 and haven't shot a roll of film since.

In many cities, a good digital camera can now effectively replace 35mm point-and-shoot and APS film cameras. The reason I say "in many cities" is that for a digital to truly replace a 35mm P&S camera, the "end result" and the way you get to the end result has to be very similar - and now it is.

To put things into perspective in terms of cost, let's analyze what you really end up with in traditional photography. If you're a film user, you pay about $5 for a roll of 35mm negative film, you shoot the roll (say, 24 prints), then take it to the corner drugstore for $7 processing (single prints). So now you're in a cycle of $12 for a finished set of 24 prints, or 50¢ each. But here's the rub: of the 24 prints you got back, only 6 of them (25%) are "keepers" (and that's on a good day, isn't it?). So you've paid $9 for 18 prints that are duds and will end up in a drawer or in the trash; effectively, you've paid $12 for 6 good prints, or $2 for each good print. Your 35mm point-and-shoot camera costs less than $200 (a low initial cost), but you're paying $2 for each good shot (a highly variable cost depending on your skills).

With digital, you print only the shots you want, and I typically pay around 20¢ for a 4x6 print at Sam's Club. You may have a camera that costs $600 (high initial cost), but you'll pay 90% less for desirable prints (low variable cost). That said, if you shoot only two rolls of film per year, you should obviously stick with film.

However, this doesn't apply to everyone. We've been talking about point-and-shoot cameras not SLRs. I recognize that there are different types of photographers. It's important that you be honest with yourself about what kind of photographer you are and what kind of photographer you want to be.
Here is how I group people:

The "Shooter": This type of photographer just cares about the end result: prints. This is the "soccer mom" of photographers, always on the move taking photos at the kids' games and plays, plus the obligatory birthday party and holiday photos. The "Shooter" is not very particular about photography or print quality...to them, it's more of a convenience and not a primary purpose of life. The "Shooter" will eventually lose or throw away the film negatives once the prints have been cataloged into a frame or scrapbook. Convenience is a very big deal to the Shooter.

The "Sharer": The Sharer is very similar to the Shooter, but will tend to keep up with negatives, maybe not permanently, but long enough to make reprints or enlargements. The Sharer typically orders "double prints" as standard practice and gives away the second set to friends or relatives. The "Sharer" is typically more persnickety about photography and print quality (everyone dreads "red-eye"), and might take extra steps to gain a little more control over the quality of the process. For the "Sharer", film negatives may or may not end up getting permanently cataloged or stored.

The "Serious Photographer": The Serious Photographer shoots a tremendous volume of images and carefully catalogs and stores negatives (you never know when you'll need them again to enter a photo contest). Additionally, the Serious Photographer is very picky about the printed results and will not hesitate to "send them back" to the processor if they are not up to par in terms of printed quality. Finally, the Serious Photographer wants to have as much control over the entire process as possible, from equipment to composition, to output. They're not getting prints at Sam's Club or the drug store. The Serious Photographer has a relationship with a lab. And the Serious Photographer reveres his photo gear like a 2 handicap golfer reveres their clubs.
Personally, I fall into the "Serious" category. Decide what category you fall into, and then read on...
Shooters: If you fall into the category of folks who use cameras simply as a convenient means of getting photos to frame, share, or put into a scrapbook, but you do NOT want to fool with a computer, then you can go digital today - provided you have access to a local place that will do digital prints. As you read further into this site, you'll come across my "Getting Prints" lesson, where I talk about the many places where you can take your "digital film" to get glossy or matte prints that look as good as (or perhaps better than) your 35mm prints.
The only hurdle you have to overcome is the cost of "getting in". If you're currently in the position of replacing your old film camera, you should very seriously consider getting a good digital camera (3 megapixels, minimum).

Sharers: If, in addition to the above, you want to have the ability to email photos to friends and family, then digital is definitely your thing. If you still want to avoid downloading photos from your camera to the computer, you're in luck! The same places that make your prints will also put the "digital negatives" onto a CD for you (for a minimal charge)
Its up to you to put the CD into a safe place in case you need it again, just as it's always been up to you to safeguard your negatives. The best part about being in the "Sharers" category is that you have a choice to use or not use a computer to deal with your photos. If a Sharer ends up with the dreaded "red eye", they can always pull it into the computer and zap it. Flexibility is the name of the game for Sharers. Digital offers some real advantages for the Sharer, both in terms of cost savings and in terms of how easy it is to share images with family and friends.

Serious Photographers: You're going to need to climb a learning curve and spend some serious $$$ on beefed up software and equipment. The payoff is that you'll have total control over the entire process from start to finish. The downside for the Serious photographer is in long term image storage. There may be issues with file formats and your ability to read image files in years to come.
To summarize this briefly, here is what each type cares about:
Shooters = Convenience
Sharers = Flexibility
Serious Photographers = Control

Digital offers unique advantages for each of these groups. If a new camera purchase is in your future you owe it to yourself to look at digital and consider it's pros and cons.

There is still a lot of confusion surrounding digital cameras and digital photography. With all the new cameras and options it just seems to get more confusing instead of clearer. It is easier to approach something if you can take it in small bites. So in an effort to make digital easier to approach and understand I've came across a facts on the introduction to digital photoghrapgy which I have also grouped together, everything you need to know to get started in ten easy to understand lessons. I will be puting on the blog various introductory steps as far as the introduction to digital photography is concerned bit by bit and if possible, I might kick off with a kind of email tutorial that will teach you and I and keep us abreast of all we needed to know about the introduction to digital photography............

Inspite of all the efforts of many various digital camera manufacturer to make a different and more functional features with the digital camera in order to make it easier and comfortable to use by people in taking digital photography yet many are still confused and fuririated many atimes when their digital photography snapshot sucks, and thats why I think we need more of the introduction to digital photography, before we can think of moving on and using the digital cemera in taking digital photography snapshot in order to be able to come out with good and quality result.......
